Bird Dog

I wish I had adequate words to describe the relationship between these two. I mean, we knew she was a special dog from the beginning, even before her accident.

It was why we emptied our piggy banks to save her.

But to watch these two, is to watch something pretty special.

Wherever Ruby is, you'll find Birdy. If Ruby's sprawled out on the living room floor, you'll find Birdy settled into her chest, nestled in the crook between her paws. Ruby puts up with the riding, and tugging, and hanging on. Lip "inspections" and eye pokes.

Bird Dog

Birdy rolls and flops and plays on her. Ruby sits and, I believe, enjoys it. She mouths her hands gently, licks her right on the kisser.

I'll gladly put up with the dog hair- plastered footies. I'll pick the hair out of lips and noses. I'll excuse the excessive amount of food that gets shared. I'll even, just this once, dismiss the fact that she nosed her way into the room of a sleeping baby to see if she was awake.

She wasn't.

Happy Weekend, friends.

I'll be back Monday with something new and fun….

  1. i do believe i’ve already told you about how i feel about this sort of dog/baby love.i can hear some tongues clicking about the “right on the kisser.”doesn’t phase me one bit.i have a picture of a newborn callie on my bed with a big black labrador right next to her, looking like there wasn’t a thing in the world he would ever leave her side for.

ok, enough before i either a)cry or b) go out and steal me a labrador.

    xoxo.

  2. Addi has the same relationship with mine and my parents lab/hound mix Lizzie. We got Lizzie when I was 14 and she was always my baby. She slept in my bed with me every.single.night, until the day I brought Addi home from the hospital that is. The day I brought Addi home (I was 19) Lizzie looked at me like I had just totally betrayed her. While all our other dogs were curious about our new addition, Lizzie wouldn’t even look at Addi much less sniff or lick her.

But after a few weeks things all of a sudden changed, if I laid Addi on the floor Lizzie would lay down next to her. She didn’t want any of the other dogs getting near her. Addi was hers. As Addi grew her bond with Lizzie grew stronger, she slept in the floor by Addi’s crib, Addi would take a bite of a chicken nugget then give Lizzie a bite and then take another bite herself. When Addi got a big girl bed Lizzie slept in there with her even.

It is kind of sad now that I moved out of my parents house, Addi has lost her best friend. But every time we go back to my parents house it is like they have never been apart. It is so cute.

  3. I love this. We just adopted a Small Brown Dog–he was a roadside rescue found by my SIL. After our horrific experience with a previous dog (long story), we thought we might just be cat-only people forever. Our new little guy, Jasper, is unbelievably patient with my daughter, putting up with endless hugs, kisses, food-handling, and picking up from a 3yo who’s about 5 times his size. He’s just what our family needed.

  4. This reminds me SO much of the Carl dog books. Wonderful illustrations and text; my mom sent them to me when my own daughter was little. If you’ve never seen them, look them up at the library, or let me know a mailing address and I’ll gladly send you ours (my DD is now 13 🙂

  5. Annie! I was thinking of the same thing when I wrote this. I actually don’t know that my younger children have read any of the Carl books, but I know my oldest has. They are wonderful, aren’t they??! I’m going to have to add them to our library list!

  6. oh the sweetness of a pup. I’m getting closer and closer to being ready for a new canine love. Reading this just put me that much closer, Eli has been doing the puppy talk lately and I know Marshall would love one also!
