the great escape

escape

Last week, I threw in the towel. The heat was getting the best of me. You'd have to be hiding under a rock (maybe it's cooler under there?) to not know about the crazy heat along the east coast. And with no air-conditioning, except for a puttering little unit in our living room window, I was going a little stir-crazy. Too hot to leave the room. Too hot to leave the house. There might as well have been a blizzard outside.

So on Tuesday when I called my mom and just the sound of her voice brought me to tears, I decided for the sake of my mental health it was probably time to get out of dodge.

a little in love

The next morning we packed up (dripping in sweat) and hit the road to her air-conditioned house a few hours away.

We hid out through the weekend. Which included a brief excursion to my old 4-H County fair where my neices and nephew were showing their goats, dairy steers and home arts. (My kids were quite impressed when I used my royalty as former fair queen to get us in the door for free.)

Birdy was a big hit with the goats. Just their size. Soft and edible.

We came home last night and had to readjust to life without cool breezes blowing across our faces while we slept. Instead, we were back to large cattle-sized fans buffeting warm, damp, thick air across our tired bodies.

Today, it's our turn to prep for our county fair. A small scheduling oversight, and it turns out all our fair projects are due tomorrow, not Thursday afternoon. So it is a crafting-crazed madhouse over here. Stitching, sewing and baking in between coats of paint and mod podge.

But I'm convinced the panic keeps our minds off the heat.

So hello. How are you? Believe it or not, it's good to be home.

  1. Oh, I feel the same way right now. Sweaty, on the verge of tears, ready to hitchhike away from this place. And you know what, I HAVE a/c…I just don’t want to use it because it makes our bill sooooooo expensive. I’m more bummed because we are so broke right now that we can’t go anywhere to escape our disgustingly hot, steamy house! 🙁 Glad you’re feeling better, though.

  2. it is so good to go home to mom’s house. I know. Glad you got a break girlfriend.Good luck at the fair to the princesses!<3kk

  3. I can’t wait to see what emerges from the craftapalooza at your house. This heat is just crazy don’t you think? I could pass on the record number of days with a low above 80, seriously.

  4. When you didn’t post, I thought you must be dodging this heat somewhere away from home. It has been unbearable until the last day or so. We lost three of our egg laying hens in three days to the heat. We changed their water several times a day to fresh cool water. They have solar powered fans in their coop, with the coop parked in the shade and my husband even took another electric powered fan out to the coop (it was a sight, extension cords running across my back yard) but still they just keeled over and died.Good luck with your 4-H projects! I hope you will post a show and tell.

  5. Glad you got a chance to get away- I bet your mom was happy to have you. :)I’m sorry it’s so miserable in your neck of the woods- we’ve certainly been there ourselves. Enjoy the fair!

  6. Oh we had a lot of heat and are going to get hit again. Glad that you found some relief, albeit temporary. Love the fair queen getting in for free thing. Ha! Good for you. We haven’t been to a 4-H Fair in a long time. It is AMAZING the size of some of the milking cows!

  7. Hi Molly! I’ve been reading (and loving!) your blog for a while now and just wanted to say hi… Hi!

I live in Maryland, too, and the heat is making me crazy (really, I think I’m losing my mind a little). We have window units, though our space may be a little easier to cool that way because we live in a rowhouse. Good luck surviving this heat! Thanks for sharing these bits of your life with us. 🙂

  8. goodness. i’m in middle georgia so your house HAS to come with air conditioning otherwise, it is inhumane. i don’t know how you do it.. and the crafts and projects you guys get done. what a good mom!

  9. Good luck at the fair! We’ve just broken the heat spell in the midwest, but I’m afraid it required thunderstorms to do it. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that they head north:)
