the wisdom of youth

Driving in the car….when I get to eavesdrop on all the good sisterly conversations….

Emma: Mary. When you get older and have a boyfriend do not carve your initials into a tree or spray paint your names on a bridge. Because if the police catch you, you'll go to jail.

Emma: Oh. And Mary. Don't have a boyfriend whose pants fall down.

Emma: Oh. And don't have a boyfriend who has a mohawk. Or pierced ears. Or a pierced nose.

Emma: And don't marry someone who is incredibly romantic. Because that gets annoying after awhile.

Mary: Well. I'm going to marry someone who looks just like Daddy and acts just like Daddy.

Mary(Later….after giving all this advice much contemplation….): And, it really doesn't matter  what the person looks like, it just matters if they're nice to you and how they treat you.

  1. I love the wisdom of little ones, and your little ones are quite wise 😉 I wanted to say hi, while I’m here, too. I’m new to your blog, but I love it and habit. Thank you for sharing.

  2. So delicious, Molly! I love these little overheard moments. I was recently at a mamas meeting where some of the mamas were expressing surprise over the fact that sibling relationships are “a thing” (most of them are first-time mamas with one child, a couple of them have recently had a second). I was amazed that they were surprised by this; before James was born I remember thinking that the thing I was looking forward to the most was the relationship that would unfold between Elisabeth and her new sibling.

And now, I think about it, and the thing I love the most is that they have this relationship that I am not a part of. It belongs to just them. Catching glimpses of their sweetest and most intimate moments is about the best thing in my life. 🙂

  3. That is the cutest thing ever… you gotta love sisters. I am the oldest of 6 girls and I can remember many moments like these growing up 🙂

  4. I love eavesdropping in on my girls. I am also a girl scout leader and I learned a great trick to help in the listening. When the girls are in the back of the van and I am driving, I put all the sound to the back of the car so they have to talk over the music. I can hear them perfectly! Note* This doesn’t work once they are older and can just text each other on their cel phones.
