the bell

the bell

we gave it to dan's mother for her birthday several years ago.

when we moved here, she gave it back.

she thought we'd like the cow, outside our door.

it's the dinner bell.

it's the "you've been down at the stream too long and i need to know you're still alive" bell.

it's the "you always play outside so nicely right before it's time to start school work" bell.

it's the "i hear the way you're talking to your sister, knock it off" bell.

it's the "i know you're out here hiding from chores" bell.

some day soon, i want to upgrade. but for now, this one does the trick.

  1. our neighbors with four kids have one, and they live by a huge corn field. watching everyone run out of the rows in late august after the bell was loudly clanged was one of the highlights of my summer.and shortly after, i added one to the porch of this house that we’re renting. i’ll never be without one, again 🙂

  2. Yep, we have one of those bells and it calls five children for all kinds of reasons. I was wanting to upgrade and my husband missed one at a garage sale.

The man in front of him bought it; apparently it was not the right time for me to upgrade.

  3. My grandma had a large bell like the one you’d like to upgrade to outside her door all while I was growing up. Now it’s outside the back door at my parent’s house. Someday I’d like to have a bell like that, too. So many uses for one sound. And awfully fun to ring as a kid.

  4. I could use one of those, our creek is a bit far from the house, (out of yelling distance unless you want to loose your voice and probably cause the neighbors to worry) I’ve had to beat on a metal stock pot with a metal spoon before..lol…bell would be much easier, not to mention cute!

  5. We had a triangle that my Mom used when we were kids. It was mostly the dinner bell, but she would use it other times too (like if she needed to know where we were outside and such).

    Love it.

  6. Took me three passes at that opening shot to spy the cow. Perfect.

We’ve a small acorn bell, handcrafted of brass and given to me by my Nana, that we use indoors, just the right scale for our home. So much nicer than shouting (though, ouch, that does happen also!)

  7. A bell is much nicer, true. As a child our family lived in an large apartment complex for a year. My friend’s mom used to whistle, you know that loud, shrill, whistle using your fingers at the sides of your mouth kind of whistle. She was amazing! You could hear that whistle from all parts of the complex. All the kids knew who it was too. Someone would say, Bianca, your mom’s calling you. So funny.

  8. Boy do we need one of those–especially for the times when they’ve been down at the creek in the woods for too long!!And yes, they always do seem to play outside so nicely when it is time to start school!

  9. your kids will remember that bell for a loooong time to come. promise.i love your blog, and i also love habit. now i’m finally saying so.so, hi. 🙂
