MOTHERHOOD / out and about

soccer mom

Emma has just begun playing on her first ever soccer team. I can't tell you how much I'm loving it. I sit there on the sidelines and can only think about how big my girl is getting. Then I look across the field to another team practicing–a group of girls that look like they might be in high school–they must think my girl–this one that I think looks so old now–is just a pee wee.

When did she learn to run like this? When did she learn to get knocked down and get right back up again without any tears? When did she learn to set her jaw and run for the goal like that? When has her smile ever been so big?

Meanwhile, for her sisters, the hour long practice time is losing its charm. So I've started packing entertainment (along with dinner for Dan and multiple water bottles). I've been bringing a little entertainment for myself as well–some stitching I've been creeping along on all winter.

Last night when the practice was over, I looked around me and realized how quickly we'd made this little space of grass look a lot like our home–traces of dinner and drinks, toys strewn about, discarded flip flops, a camera. It doesn't take us long to settle in. And make a mess.

Emma needs your help

The big excitement last night was the acquiring of the team jerseys. This is big, big stuff. They are royal blue and now the girls have been given the assignment to come up with a team name before their first big game on Saturday.

Emma had to ditch her idea to be Tigers, "since they're not blue", and is pondering her father's idea of "The Wave".  But I'm sure she'd love to hear your ideas as well….She didn't like my idea–the Jellyfish. C'mon? What's wrong with that?

  1. by the way, sarah–the coach hasn’t said anything to me about little e playing. but last night he was short jerseys, so i’m guessing the team is full?? maybe next year they can be on the same team together?! sorry!

  2. oh! team naming! how fun: )

    the whirlwinds

that was my first softball team name.”we are the whirlwinds, the mighty, mighty whirlwinds”

i mean, i could teach her ALL the cheers and everything!

  3. Let’s see, they could be…

The AvalancheThe Blue MorphosThe Blue JaysThe Blue Birds

They could even be something that has nothing at all to do with blue and just call it ironic.

  4. My daughter also went to her first soccer practice yesterday and I had many of the same thoughts as I watched from the sidelines trying. When she came home with her brand new jersey she was under the impression that the name of her team was the jersey’s- she had never heard that term before…really made me chuckle!

  5. Molly

This is so funny, a friend of mine was reading your blog and realized that our girls must be on the same team……I think they are. My daughter is also Emma but the team has started calling her by her nickname Izzy since your daughter is also an Emma.

Keith Storm is your daughters coach, right?

I like the post from “Bee” (see above)…The Storms since the coaches last name is Storm.

See you at the game on Saturday :)Kris

  6. We spent years on the soccer fields, and although many of my friends say they don’t miss it, I must admit I do. I loved every minute of it. Enjoy!

  7. what a small world! We’ll have to officially meet on saturday.

And I agree, I love the name Storm. I’ve been trying to get Emma to get on board with it, too. She’s still holding on to wave. 🙂

  8. My daughter’s team did this on Monday. They are red, but they all seemed stuck on “Golden Eagles” bizarrely enough. Then one little (wrestling fanatic, apparently) girl yells out “Red Smashdowns” and they all squealed and jumped and that was the decided-upon name.

I kind of like “the Dolphins” too. Maybe they could go literary and call themselves the “Blue Dolphins.”

  9. Oh boy, we’re just now starting up. Lily is in her 3rd year and Alex will be starting his first year. I have a lot of soccer practices ahead of me!

  10. We just our our first soccer game for our oldest, 8, of the season yesteray. I just posted about it today on my blog lol! For my 4yr old, I take a small pair of safely scissors to practices. She can sit and cut the grass for hours!!

  11. How about the Tidal Waves? That was the name of my daughter’s team this season. We loved everything about soccer and what it taught our daughter as well!

  12. Well I coached soccer for my sisters for 7 seasons(while I was in HS) and loved it! We were royal blue once and were “The Blue Meanies” I am not encouraging mean behavior, but am a big Beatles fan and so that’s where that came from. A few more ideas the Blue Cheese and Blue Jays. Have fun and enjoy the game!
