DAILY FARM LIFE

powerless

We've had two days of storms that left us in long stretches without electricity. Perfectly timed to disturb afternoon naps, keep my children up too late, and wake my children way too early. You'd probably think that someone like me would welcome the chance to rough-it, to get in touch with my inner pioneer. But this time, I just wasn't in the mood.

I think grumpy, tired, impossible children elevated my lack of patience. (Though I always think it is one of those which came first, the chicken or the egg? kinds of questions. Which came first the grumpy mama or the grumpy children?)

I tried to think of Melissa, who just went through six days without power. She says she's still recovering.

ouch

We lost a large branch from our Polonia tree and our Ash tree split in half, neatly falling between another large tree and an outbuilding. It was as if someone just laid it down between the two. For now, it makes for an amazing (tick infested) tree house. And in a few months, it will make for great firewood.

for scale

I'll be back tomorrow with another fun review and giveaway from Chronicle Books. In the meantime, I hope you'll take a moment to check out my new sponsors for July. There's some good stuff in that side bar!

  1. I’m sorry, I can totally understand how discouraging that must feel! Somehow, summer is supposed to be for fun, and for truly enjoying your poineer location, and feeling so blessed! We often get power failures in my remote corner of the world, and they are no fun at all, even when your freezer is empty. This winter we got snowed in, no power, totally isolated, for almost a week, my youngest just out of hospital the day before, but it was winter, and one kind of expects (dreads?) the elements to behave … wintery! Just think of that nice supply of fire wood you got yourself: choping all of it will be fun:)! Have a nice weekend!

  2. Lucky your falling tree chunks missed doing too much damage. Hope the clear up is painless. And you (and more importantly, they) catch up with a little rest.

  3. We have been having heavy rains and wind here in Western Massachusetts. Looks like we aren’t the only ones enduring the excitement. Best of luck with the clean up.

  4. Oh, Honey. I feel you. Pioneering is fun for maybe 24 hours. It’s like camping. Then it is NOT fun. Mostly in the way of “still recovering” we just didn’t want to go anywhere- friends, church, family’s houses- afterward. Now we’re about back in the swing.

I hope things settle down for you!xo

  5. I’m so glad you weren’t hit by anything. We’ve had sooo many thunderstorms in the last week and I’m constantly moving the car out from under the trees. Being without power is fun for a while…until you go to turn something on without thinking.

  6. We’re on our fourth thunderstorm of the day here. I think the cat lives under the bed permanently as a result. Two days without power is no fun; I’ve had that happen in city and country and either way, meh, especially if it’s hot, if there was stuff you’d rather not see rot in the fridge, etc. Once my folks in rural Mass. lost power for some 6 or so days during a snowstorm, no generator, no woodstove. Ugh, that’d be the worst. Frozen, cranky kids 😛

  7. Well, neat tree falling at least. And it didn’t land on a house like several did here in my town last week during a tornado. Ripped up & felled several hundred + year old trees. In Connecticut? Two days with no power. And now thunderstorms every day & night keeping the 4 year old up. But yeah for firewood for you 🙂

  8. being without power just sucks. sorry you had to go through that – glad you and your buildings were safe, though. been thinking about you…will call soon.

  9. Isn’t that the way it always is in the country? You’re all “what an amazing place to play! Whee!” and then ten minutes later you realize you’re being feasted on. Boo, ticks!
