Show & Tell: my new favorite kitchen gadget

Showandtell_updated

To me, this seems like the perfect "Show & Tell" as we happily slip in to strawberry season. Yesterday I gave it a workout on two batches of jam and it gave me the most perfect, slightly chunky strawberries–which is how I love my jam.

And I should probably thank Courtney as well, who turned me on to this nifty little kitchen gadget when we were having a discussion about crying over chopped onions.

VeggiChop

Today's Show & Tell is called the Chef'n VeggiChop. It is a small kitchen chopper that requires no electricity and quickly chops, dices with the pull of a cord. It's like starting a lawn mower (but easier) or working out on a rowing machine (but much more fun).

I got my VeggiChop
just over a week ago, and I've found tons of uses for it. I've made fresh salsa by throwing all the ingredients right into the chopping bowl, chopped nuts and veggies for a salad and used it to make strawberry jam. It is simple and fun to use. Simple (and safe) enough, that I'm completely comfortable with Emma and Mary using it–as long as they remember to keep their hands on the lid, so it doesn't send puree'd veggies everywhere.

I've always been the kind of person to shy away from extra gadgets in the kitchen–I don't like them cluttering up my limited counter space and it's hard to find a convenient place to store them where I'll actually get them out and use them.

But I've hardly put away this little gadget–it goes from use, to the dishwasher and back to my counter as part of lunch or dinner prep.

And with all these great summer fruits and veggies just weeks away from emerging from our gardens, I imagine it will be getting even more use. I'm seeing lots of batches of pesto in my future….

Check out this quick demo to see exactly how the chopper works.

And guess what?? Thanks to the generous folks at Chef'n I have TWO VeggiChops to giveaway.  You know the drill–leave a comment on this post to be entered in the giveaway. I'll choose and announce two random winners on Sunday.

  1. This is super cool! I’m always using my food processor attachment for the blender, but this sounds like a much easier (and lighter) option.

  2. This looks like a great way to get the kids into the kitchen. Not that they really need enticing. I’ve got one in the kitchen right now making a sandwich. Two just left after peeling their carrots. Does it show them how to clean up after themselves?

  3. That is handy.

More importantly, though, I’m jealous that you have berries. We have to wait probably another week here. Sad!! I’m itching to try my hand at jam again this year. I guess I’ll have to be patient in the meantime.

  4. Oh boy. I’m pretty new to the kitchen, so everything is a little daunting (but still fun!) and it seems to me that this is an incredibly handy tool! With plans in my near future (probably every weekend during the season) to make strawberry jam, this sounds perfect! Thanks for giving us the chance 🙂

Oh, also, I just found your blog a few days ago. I can’t remember who linked me over here (sorry!), but you were immediately added to my reader! Though I am not yet a mother, you offer really great insight into all areas of domestic life, which I have been very much entranced by. So, in short, thank you!

  5. It looks like so much fun to use, my kids would love it! Thanks for the chance. You’re awesome, by the way.

  6. Oooohhh– I have a salad spinner that works the same pull-cord way, the the boys form a little line to help with it.

I would love to put one of these to use!

  7. This looks awesome!! I’m making strawberry jam this weekend, and seriously can HARDLY wait for peach season for peach jam!

  8. Looks great! I purged my food processor a few years ago because it was so big and bulky. This looks like a much better gadget.

  9. I love the idea of not having to plug it in and being able to totally submerse it for washing up.

  10. Oh, I would love to win one of these. I’ve thought about getting something like this for a while and just never have gotten around to it. I really dig that green color, too. Thanks for the chance to win!

  11. Wow, that’s super! No fossil fuels, just a little muscle. Ah, the three-year-old helper will LOVE this. And my tearing eyes will certainly appreciate chopping onions with a VeggiChop

  12. We won’t have berries for a few more weeks and then I’ll be making jam. Wish I could find a freezer jam that is more berry and less sugar.

  13. wow. this looks super fun!my little ones would love this. my daughter (almost 2) is always asking to cook. anything to make them more apart of the process would be fantastic!

  14. I’ve come close to buying this chopper a couple of times; only thrift has kept it from my kitchen. I’d love one!

  15. The gaget sounds neat. I just finished making my strawberry jam yesterday. First time making it so we will see how it turns out. Not sure you can mess it up. Seems pretty straight forward. The gaget would have come in handy. As I was slicing and mashing by hand I knew there had to be an easier way! Thanks for the tip.

  16. Those look so neat, I thought I had tried every chopping gadget around but I have never seen that one!

  17. What a cool little gadget – like a sharp salad spinner :o) I’m going to try strawberry freezer jam this year so it would be perfect.

  18. Nice! Great to see a new “gadget” that does its thing without any electricity! Looks like it’d be great to take camping too!

  19. This is fantastic! I let my children use little choppers (the kind that make crinkle-cut fries), and I think that they would love this! Of course, any opportunity to get them to help out is the real prize 🙂

    Fingers crossed!

  20. I am so in the market for one of these. We’ve been researching food processors this week, I think I will add this to our search. I love that you don’t have to plug it in, or use up too much counter space.

  21. Kid friendly and strawberry jam made easy…yipee! My four year old and I would be delighted 🙂

  22. this looks like it’s the perfect size! I love my chopper, but it doesn’t hold very much and I always have to find a place to plug it in. I like that this one is ‘person powered’ – my arms could always use a work out! 🙂

  23. Mmmmm….Strawberry jam, pesto, homemade salsa oh yum yum yummy! And a pull string so my almost 3 year old can say he made stuff all by himself, sounds great!

  24. I like that it’s so easy to use and safe for the kids! Looks kind of cute too and the fact that it doesn’t turn the strawberries to mush is awesome!!!

  25. I would love one of these. It would come in so handy when I am making my jams and also my daughter’s baby food. I don’t buy her food at the store. I make it all. Where can we buy one if we don’t get chosen?

  26. How fun! My big, clunky food processer (which I hardly ever pull out because I am lazy that way!) is dying, so this would be awesome!

  27. What a fun little machine! We have strawberries coming out of our ears! (dh planted a ton last year) we’ve made 2 double batches of jam & have dehydrated a bunch as well. This looks like it’d be great for jam!

  28. Hmmm, I was just looking for a way to lose some of that baby fat, as my 2 year old lovingingly calls the soft skin of my belly where the baby USED to be. Can we make a 25 minutes workout with of this handy machine? I’ll do it and post it on Youtube. Hehehe. Or maybe it can be the latest dance craze. We 90’s teens were doing the “lawn mower” and “sprinkler” at all the parties, now us 30 somethings can do the “veggie chop” at our mommy and me play dates. But seriously, this little machine will make making my own baby food so easy and I can do it during nap time and not worry about waking up the baby with loud blender sounds. So….if it’s not too much to ask, I am asking!

  29. Oh my gosh I TOTALLY need one of these, and I’m buying one if I don’t win. But I REALLY want to win, pretty please! 🙂
