It's like instantly having a newborn in the house again–without the nine months of preparation, doctor visits, showers, blurry ultrasound pictures tacked to your refrigerator.

On Saturday, Emma and I snuck out of the house well before normal waking time to make a two hour road-trip west to pick up a special furry package.

sticking close

Meet Ruby, the newest member of the mommycoddle household.

We've been waiting patiently for this day for quite awhile. Passing up on puppies that "just didn't feel right". But this time it all came together perfectly.

For now, she's learning the ropes. Getting her ears boxed by fluffy black cats, finding her favorite spot under the red bench in the mudroom hallway, learning there are appropriate times to play with a large (and very patient) yellow lab–but not at three o'clock in the morning, discovering that the girls are okay when they're splashing in the pool and you don't have to jump in after them.

And she's learning who her people are.

taking it all in

After a walk around the farm this morning, practically tripping me with every step as she galloped to keep up with my big black boots, she's now asleep under the kitchen table–body sprawled out under the chair, chin firmly planted across Emma's little toes.

  1. I could melt into those puppy eyes. I can feel those sharp little puppy teeth from here. Oh, Molly! Good luck and enjoy her.Uh, oh. One of my girls just saw Ruby’s picture over my shoulder. It’s all over for me, now.

  2. Ahh–I saw the photos on flickr and moseyed over here. She looks like a sweet pup. I’m sure you guys are super excited–lucky kids!

  3. OH! those photos took me right back to the black labs we had when i was growing up…and that puppy smell. So much fun and toe warming ahead of you all 🙂 Congratulations Ruby on joining the zoo!

  4. What a darling puppy! I have a RUBY too! These girls don’t look anything alike though… 🙂

Puppies are just too much fun…….I hope you enjoy a long and happy time together…

    Blessings,Spencer

  5. Super cute! I love the name Ruby too. We just brought home a puppy one week ago and I’m sure life will never again be the same. Our little one is named Iris.

  6. She definitely is a keeper!!! those eyes are hard to resist! congratulations on the new addition (tell her not to scare the kittens too much) 🙂

  7. Anke,You should see her with the kittens! It is too funny. They are so curious about her, then she takes her nose and rolls one over! They go running behind the cupboards and the bench. And then come slowly crawling out for more! It’s hilarious. Your sweet kitten is the most curious of all! 🙂

  8. Molly, is double-commenting as socially odious as double-dipping? I hope not. I just want to update, that when I showed Ruby’s pictures around to my girls today, they said: “NOW can we get a new puppy? You can POST about it!” and (this one with the phony coolness of a 12 year old): “Yeah, Mom. Do it for the blog.” I hope you are enjoying beautiful Ruby. Hang on to your slippers.

  9. She’s beautiful.Yesterday I ran with the puppies for the first time. It’s a pitty I’ll probably never find out why it is necessary for them to run right beside me (touching my legs and tripping me up) when there are kilometers upon kilometers upon empty space around us.

  10. So, so adorable. I can’t wait for the appropriate time for our family to have a new addition of the black lab variety. we’re expecting a (human) baby this summer so i think it might be a little while before we’re going to get a puppy. but these pictures and your words made me want one very soon.

  11. Soo cute, we have a dark brown Labrador, now for almost a year and they are soo sweet. The things you describe here are so real to me! Sorry they grow so much so fast. The good thing is that they stay so sweet! Good luck!
