Just an Innocent Walk in the Snow

So I thought it would be a good idea to go outside first thing this morning. Get the girls some fresh air. Spend a little time exploring in the lightly falling snow.

independence

Look for tracks.

cat

chickens and birds

guineas

Look at the snow hanging delicately on the pine branches.

snow on cedars

Feed the chickens.

henny penny

Take a few pictures.

last summer's sunflowers

By the time we made it out to the back field, around to the chicken coop and back to the front walk again…………..

Mary and Emma had gotten in an argument because Mary wouldn't walk down to the stream with Emma. And Emma pushed Mary, sending her tumbling into the snow. Which left Mary crying over freezing cold hands and wet knees. (Mary can't handle any extreme temperatures–hot or cold.)

attitude

Emma then continued to give me a little attitude and was sent into the house and her attendance at tonight's 4-H meeting is in jeopardy.

Elizabeth tripped over her own feet and had an up-close encounter with the sidewalk.

By the time I got to the front door, I had three crying girls in the middle of meltdowns while I tried to remove coats, and hats and boots, attend to freezing cold hands, deal with attitudes and check for bloody chins.

and this is how it ended....

Sometimes, in these moments, I have to admit, that I lose my cool. But sometimes the absolute craziness of it becomes suddenly humorous to me, and I'm able to handle it with a cool attitude and a calm demeanor.

Thankfully, that's what happened this morning. And I still managed to snap off a few pictures of the pretty snow.

I love it when things don't go exactly as planned.

Happy Tuesday.

  1. I don’t know if I would say ‘i love it’ (since today we are having melt-down moments and arguing…), but thanks for posting this and making an authentic day more enjoyable. Love those animal track photos.

  2. you make me laugh! my small person and i have a big day planned tomorrow i can already see most of it going out the window. hey ho!Great TracksRegardsCatherine

  3. I have to say when I have the whole gang in meltdowns, it’s almost easier to handle than having just one of them lose it. Precisely for the reason you gave – it’s comical. Nice post.

  4. Good for you for holding yourself together, Molly. I usually start yelling or laughing hysterically. Laughing is better for all involved but my children generally aren’t in possession of their senses of humor when they’re mid meltdown and generally respond not all that differently from how they would if I were yelling. One of these days I’ll cultivate a calm collected sort of response. Hopefully before they leave home.

  5. oh yes…moments like these are also very motherhood moments. nobody is ever gonna’ be “cool” all the time…is good to take it all in good humorous mood and realize that in 10 minutes everybody is off to their own shenanigans and nothing ever happened!

  6. I’m glad I’m not the only one with a girl who hates hot and cold. I’m at my wits end sometimes with my Eden! But yeah, what seems like would be enriching becomes a big flop. So sorry. We’ve all tried it eh? And I agree with Mary, it’s hilarious that you took the “melt down” picture. So great!

  7. i try to giggle during meltdowns, too. they are part of our life. and some days they seem like a big part.this day will probably be one of your favorite memories.

  8. Ive been peaking in on your blog for a little while now. This is the first time I am leaving a comment though. I just love how honest you are about the daily struggles that come with having children. Its really quite refreshing. I have 2 sisters and a brother and when I read some of your posts it brings me back to the fighting and its kind of funny. I now have one daughter and hope to have more. I look forward to the pleasant moments and to the bickering too. Ill need to remember this when they are fighting on a long car ride or pulling hair.

I sometimes find humor at inappropriate times and I think I’ll be laughing at my little ones when i know i should be stern. we’ll see

  9. Ha! I’ve been there too! Trying to provide a great memory for them and ending up in a fight. I feel your pain. I’m totally trying the picture taking the next time someone melts down in our house! Ha!
