A Forced Vacation

DSC_0016

Maybe God was trying to tell me something, but last Friday, as I was checking emails, my computer went 'pop' and then went black. Perhaps I should have been listening to the voices in my head, that for the last week or so, have been telling me that it's really time I did another backup of my hard drive.

The computer has been off to the doctor and the report is not good today. A busted hard drive, and a sadly overworked system. So now, I'm left to crunch numbers and decide whether to fix what was or replace the whole thing.

I'm trying desperately to not think about the things that are lost. Fortunately, I have been diligently uploading most of my most-loved photos to flickr and I somewhat recently dumped most of my photos onto an external hard drive. So, for now, the thing that worries me most is the oodles of lost emails and contacts.

Date recovery isn't cheap, let me tell you. So I'll probably muddle my way through rebuilding my contact list. So if you've emailed me and haven't heard anything in reply, that's probably the reason.

Meanwhile, if you really want to know, the forced break is kind of nice. I'm baking way too many things, giving my kids way too much school work and making way too much progress on my Fall (as in projects I wanted to finish in fall '08) knitting projects.

But I know I'll be ready to come back. Soon. Refreshed. Recharged. And backed up.

  1. Oh no! That’s bad. I just got a new exturnal hard drive just for my pictures. My laptop is really old and I never know when it’s gonna go! Good luck!

The girls are having MAJOR ponie withdraw. We have not been able to ride since before Christmas because of the weather 🙁

I hope we can catch up to each other soon!

  2. Oh, that is so bad! I am so sorry about the computer problems and that the prognosis was not good. ((hugs)) It is scary how much we keep on our computers that is precious to us and forget to back it up. I am so guilty of that!

  3. Oh no! Sorry to hear about your computer. Are there any tutorials out there for data recovery? I mean, if you’re going to throw it out, might as well try to get things back on your own, right? Even if you break it?

Anyway, breaks are good. Remember the time before computers?

  4. Oh, I’m so sorry. I’ve been wondering about this type of thing happening to me as well…all those homeschooling pdfs and notes and craft ideas. Hmmm… Glad to hear that you will have a break – maybe it’ll be a blessing in disguise.

  5. I can sympathize because I just went through this! 🙁

Had to do new anti-virus protection and add some memory, but didn’t get back lots of pictures, craft project instructions/ideas, recipes, and who-knows-what else.

  6. What a pain! I hope you haven’t lost too much. Our computer is showing signs of age, and just 2 nights ago I made sure every single photo is on our external HD. I shoudl redo the other files as well, but have no idea how to save the emails. I should look into it. Thanks for the reminder!

  7. I know how frustrating that is! The same happened to us not to long ago. Your diligence has paid off, because we had not been backing our photos up and we paid quite a bit to get them back. Hope the cost is not too much for you, but we found it was worth it. Photos are priceless.
