the news from Thomas Run

Good morning, friends.

A few things I forgot to mention in yesterday's post, three of which I've already forgotten.

If you have time, please take a moment to read my latest post on babycenter. It was one of those good, much-needed kind of parenting lessons, but the post quickly got shoved deep into the site because of all the election day blogging. I'd love it if you'd check it out.

I have a large box of multi-grain Cheerios hiding in my cupboard in the pantry for Dan's need for a before-bed snack. He has an enviable metabolism and eats often. All that to say, I think I have officially weaned my children off of cold cereal for breakfast. We were having so much trouble with them being starving and grumpy come mid-morning, that Dan and I really wanted to get them off boxed cereal and on to something more hearty for breakfast. And now they've fallen in love with a good bowl of oatmeal with milk and honey, or some toast and yogurt, or my granola. Things are so much better. Those tummies stay full for a whole morning. It makes everything go more smoothly. And not buying boxed cereal is saving me big money on the old grocery bill.

So you'd think "cue the photo of hearty breakfast here", but I have none. Instead you get a picture of my new winter-time laundry drying system.

winter-time laundry drying system + clothes thief

I purchased this drying rack this week at my local Amish-run General Store in Pennsylvania. I'm falling in love with that store–good toys, every old-timey kitchen gadget you could want, every old-fashioned piece of quilting fabric and flannel you could imagine and good prices. I even bought a few old school hot water bottles for the girls–who sleep in the room farthest away from the wood stove. Now I just need to cover them in something snuggly.

The drying rack is definitely handmade and so much more sturdy than my previous Target-purchased ones. I love it. Though, you'll notice that I'll be dealing with a clothes-thief all winter long. She likes to bring me clothes from the rack, one by one. I'm sure the charm of laundry-swiping will wear off eventually.

this is actually some sort of happy growly snarl

Alright, that's the news from Thomas Run. Oh, except for the fact that Emma taught Elizabeth how to do forward rolls all by herself. She's spent more time on her head this morning, than on her feet, with no concern over what she might be rolling over, or on to. This should be interesting. But it's just too funny either way.

  1. i just bought a box of multi-grain joe’s os yesterday. first boxed cereal i’ve bought in a long time – but we were in trader joe’s at 4, which is not good for us. and i had to do something. and this morning the kids were excited to eat them. but they didn’t like them! ha. so they ate my fresh-baked scones instead. not sure that will keep their bellies full all morning, but it sure was tasty.

and love the drying rack. mine is toppling as i type.

  2. Oh how funny (about Dan and the multi-grain cheerios).

I did a horrible job with air-drying my clothes this summer. (With the miscarriage and surgery and everything else, and the laundry line way too far away, or so it seemed.) So I’ve been ever so slowly trying to get back into the habit. I’ve found, though, with my four kids that I almost have to *plan* the laundry in order for it to dry on time. Wish I could figure that out a little bit better. Thankfully, our garage stays pretty warm. That rack looks so much more sturdy!

  3. We’ve been doing the same thing on cereal – I think we’re down to once a week or so on cold cereal breakfast. It takes more work to go the other way, but it’s so worth it.

Waiting for photos of forward rolls!

  4. We noticed a huge difference getting the kids off cold cereal as well. Bob’s Mill 12 grain hot cereal is a big hit as is scottish oatmeal or even cream of wheat in a pinch. They’re cheerful all the way to lunch!

Now I’m clicking on your general store link… I hope they ship to Idaho!

  5. I have that same drying rack…we bought ours in Lancaster and I love it…I agree, so much better than the superstore kind. We’re also working on reducing the amount of box cereal we consume…smoothies are one of our favorite new breakfasts. I really enjoy your blog…I’ve been reading it for some time. I think my mother in law knows your mom…through Aglow. My mil came over the other day and said, you should read my friend’s daughters blog..it’s called “Molly Coddle”. I cracked up! Small world, huh?

  7. I have that same drying rack..ours is from Lancaster. I use it all the time. We’re also weaning ourselves from cold cereal. Our favorite new breakfast is smoothies. I really enjoy your blog. I’ve been reading it for quite a while. I think my mother in law is friends with your mom. They know each other through Aglow. She came over the other day and said, “you should read my friend’s daughter’s blog…it’s called Molly Coddle.” I cracked up! Small world, huh?

  8. I also have a laundry snatcher and he has been doing forward rolls for a while, I am a little bit worried about the other gymnastics that he is trying to copy from his sister I think he may hurt himself!Love the wooden dryer so sturdy looking wish I had one like that we used to have one when we were small like that

  9. I've been attempting to use my clothes rack for drying recently, but since mine is 'dinky' and we haven't turned on our furnace yet (yeah!), drying clothes inside has been somewhat of a challenge. Where did you purchase that one?

  10. I just found you blog today and loved the read. I too will be weaning my children off the boxed cereal. I was just told today by a dear friend, to purchase a slow-cooker and you can make oatmeal the night before and wake up to a warm, creamy, bowl of goodness in the morning. I'm very excited. Look forward to read your tales….

  11. Maybe I should just admit it now…I should have actually read your entire post instead of just 'looking at the pictures' – duh! I would have seen where you purchased your rack. Sorry. (ps – most of the time I DO read everything…)

  12. Molly, cover the hot water bottles with recycled felted sweaters you cut out to fit over the bottles. I've found these to be the best for keeping warm as well.
