morning has broken

sweet moments in my morning
Sweet, dear, curious-about-everything Elizabeth broke my favorite kitchen dish this morning. A wedding present that some of my favorite recipes go into–baked zucchini, a family-sized batch of apple crisp…it looks like they aren't making the exact color anymore. And right now I'm not sure I can justify replacing it. Silly sadness over a blue oval dish. Moving on…

There has been lots of other sweetness in my morning today. Catching this moment between sisters. They sat there for quite a long time. Emma doing such a good job of carrying on conversation with her sister's squeals, clapping, and warbled attempts at new words like kitty, dog and go. She is such a good big sister.

she was so happy, then we closed the door

And then of course, we closed the door and broke her heart. Until we could distract her with her favorite food–strawberries. I've given up keeping her in clothes that aren't stained by smears of red strawberry fingers. She's definitely my daughter–the stained clothes part, and the love of the berry.

time to get more
I can remember the house we used to go to when I was younger, to pick up strawberries every year–a white house, on a busy road with a huge field of strawberries. On the way home from picking, I'd scooch down in the back seat of our orange VW Bus and polish off a whole pint before our wheels were even back in the driveway. (And for the record, if someone showed up at my door with a VW bus, vanagon, eurovan…I'd trade in all the amenities, and bells and whistles of my current car for that VW, and never look back.)

In other news, life is busy. We are pushing to move in this weekend. I need to get over there and take some more pictures to share. Dan has made some good progress over the last week and a half–finishing our bedroom, painting floors…Sometimes, at random moments in the day I get these little, okay big, flutters of excitement in my stomach.

And other flutters of the nervous kind–I found out my homeschool review is coming up next week. I'm nervous. I admit it. But in a way, it's been affirming to start gathering things together from this year, reminding me that yes, we did make progress. It's also great incentive to get some stuff finished–like figuring out a way to sum up all this horse learning overload that we've been talking about all year…

Happy Wednesday, everyone. It is Wednesday, right? Oh, yes. It is. Of course, because Emma is already dressed for her 4:30 riding lesson.

  1. Why is it always the favorite dish that has to be the one? Sigh… I hear you on the homeschool review..mine is next week too; I sort of love pulling everything together and seeing how much we’ve done. Happy Tuesday.

  2. Oh, that sucks about your dish! I hate when that happens. But what a sweet moment you captured at the door. Seeing my little ones together like that is what warms my heart the most.Good Luck with the move! I can’t wait to see more pictures.

  4. I know how that feels – I had a favorite coffee mug (that only cost me 50 cents) that broke when a little one accidentally dropped it. I still think about that. Silly, I know.

Congratulations on the upcoming move. Looking forward to seeing more pictures. You’re going to be one busy(ier) lady!

  5. Oh, I love the memory of picking strawberries. We had a red VW bus that we traveled the country in during the summer. Now I have a Eurovan and I’m doing the same with my kids this summer – hitting the road for an 8 week road trip. I can’t wait. I think I’m going to hit as many berry fields as possible along the way.

Good luck with the move this weekend! Glad it’s you and not me.

  6. It’s funny how we know what day it is by weather we ride or not on that day :)We used to have a tan VW vanagon. We used to haul our sheep to the fair in it and then hose it out when we were done! 🙂

  7. i hope the weekend move goes well for you. that’s very exciting. do the kittens go with you? show pictures. it looks like such a lovely place to call home!

  8. You might want to put in a “permanent search” on eBay for your dish that broke. I did this for one of my dishes that a child broke and found it. You never know, another one just might show up on eBay.

  9. I bought that same oval dish in blue – not sure if it’s the same blue – last Christmas at a Williams-Sonoma outlet store. Might be worth checking. We also had a yellow VW Vanagon when I was growing up – it looked like a banana – many happy memories of it and trips in it!

  10. I agree with Homejewel . . check it out on Ebay for your dish. You never know.

That Elizabeth is so stinkin’ cute . . her little tear stained face just melts my heart. Sisters are awesome. Someday, you’ll have to read “Little Women” to them.

“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.”

  11. we rode in the red VW bus. good times!

good luck with your review – we’re lucky that here we don’t have any kind of reviews, which is nice – but i keep a binder full of school stuff from the year anyway, and they’re fun to look through!

  12. a few years ago (at about age 2) l. broke my great-grandmother’s cut crystal bowl. six months before that, she broke a beautiful glass bowl that was a wedding gift. both things that would have sent me into a catatonic state before i became a mother. (how does that shift happen?) i feel for you and the dish. i do. so much.

    the move! hurray!

  13. So sorry to hear about the loss of your dish, it looks like a nice one, maybe something I should put on a wish list for myself….Those sisters are about the cutest thing ever. Nice moment captured.Last but certainly not least, Good Luck with the move this weekend!! I hope things go really smoothly and I can’t wait to see more pictures.

  14. bummer about the plate , i know how you feel, recently happened here! strawberries are my favorite err well berries in general! and good like on your review , i’ll keep you in my prayers!

  16. I am so sorry about the dish. Do you have a pic of it? Maybe we can help replace it? Maybe someone has one just like it tucked away being unused that they would LOVE to go to you.

What sweet pics. Your girls are just lovely.

I understand about the VW. I had a VW bug in high school. It was old then. Someone had repainted it aqua blue and you could see me coming and going. *grins*

If someone drove up in that car, I would let them drive away in my CRV. The sweet memories of that car.

Maybe it’s the same way with the dish. It’s the memories and all that was attached to it. ~smiles~ Glad they did not break with it.

  17. Our strawberry season has started here, they are so fragrant.

I would love to hear more on your homeschooling, what subjects you are doing and how you structure your day, how you have taught/teaching yours to read or write.

Mister T here regularly breaks something or other here. I haven’t got much left to break now.

  18. sorry about the dish. i figure i broke my fair share of my mom’s things so i’m getting repaid!

good luck with your review and the move – such good and happy things happening to you, molly. hooray!

  19. sorry about your dish 🙁

we love vw camper vans – just saw one last week for sale, parked in a farmyard .. we’re hoping to go back and take a look (we do NOT need a van, of course) before someone buys it! :^)

  20. sorry about your dish. that is the worst feeling. 🙁

i share your vw van love. we had a couple of them growing up, and we’d camp ALL THE TIME. we are thinking about buying one and fixing it up… there are tons of them on ebay! 🙂

  21. Good luck with the move & homeschool review :o)!! I’m sure both will go fine… or better than fine. Sorry about your dish being broken. Maybe you can find another one in an even nicer color…. still, I understand sentimental value on things. Well, I hope you have a nice weekend… and a sunny one, too! xox, Linnea

  22. Molly, how’s it going? We finally have our house nearly put back together (since our flood). But all four kids have hand-foot-mouth. So there’s no inviting you over. Yet. Looks like we might meet first at the MNO. Lol.

  23. I can definitely relate to the love of strawberries. I go crazy over them! In fact, I have flown to Florida several years specifically to go to the Strawberry Festival in my grandparent’s hometown! It’s a great tradition, and I missed this year… very sad(it was worth it, though, because I couldn’t go because my daughter was born!). It’s nice, though, because then I get 2 strawberry seasons in the year(and LOTS of strawberry shortcake!) I always vow to can some and freeze some… but there never seems to be any left when I am done! Go figure…

  24. What color was your dish? I have a dark redish one that is a discontinued color which I rarely use. If you happened to have had that color, I’m sure we could work out a swap . . .
