someone has to stay home and knit the dishcloths

That’s what I told my husband last night, when he walked in the door at 11:00pm, after putting another two and a half hours of work in at the house after dinner. He found me kicked back on the sofa, putting the final stitches on another dishcloth, watching the finale of….ahem, this is hard to admit in public and might lose me some readers…The Bachelor. Shhhh…please don’t tell anyone else.

The past few months of bachlorette-hood for me while Dan puts in evenings at the house, have meant that I’ve done some serious damage in the world of girlie movies, bad TV and my dishcloth stash. Knitting needles and the redbox have been my pseudo husband on nights I found myself alone in an empty house, but for sleeping babes in the back rooms. Dan asked me the other night, as I was finishing up Juno if there were any movies left in the RedBox that I haven’t seen…It’s not so much that, as it is that I’m running out of movies I want to see in the RedBox.

someone stop me

So armed with the only skein of cotton yarn I could find in my stash, a simple, knit-without-looking pattern, and some good (and bad) movies, I’ve got myself a nice collection of knitted dishcloths and an answer to the question I often hear from my sister and mother, "have you seen any good movies lately?"

I’ve never knitted dishcloths before and it really is quite addicting. And now that I’ve started using these beauties, I’m not sure I could go back to the stinky blue sponge that I’m currently using. I knit mine up on slightly smaller needles so they are more hand-sized and have a tighter stitch. And I love them.

They were inspired by THIS picture. And the pattern can be found HERE. It’s called "Grandma’s Favorite". Is there really any more that needs to be said?

  1. Good Morning, Don’t for a minute feel a bit sheepish about watching “chic flicks” & the “Bachelor”!!!!….and besides you are also whipping up stacks of dishcloths! My mother makes those same dishcloths for me & you are right on!…you will never want to use anything else again!…and about that bachelor?….At our house we loved him!!! & loved that he picked “Shane”!! off to start my day!…..Really enjoy your blog!….Heidi 🙂

  2. i love the dishcloths , oh and redbox too! knitting while watching a movie is a requirement for me otherwise , i’m chancing sleeping through the whole thing :0)

  3. oh my! i might just have to try these! i have only tried to knit once…and, honestly, i didn’t like it at all. but…this looks simple and useful. i may have to give it a whirl again!

  4. pretty, pretty, and oh so useful. And so much less grody than sponges! That’s what I’m planning for summer knitting- more dishcloths!

  5. your bachelorette evenings sound wonderful to me! nothing’s better than watching junk food for the brain (law and order marathons are the best!) and knitting… i’m actually envious of you!

  6. Great pattern I think this will definately be a good one to knit lots of so I can put them away for spare gifts. I can think of lots of people to give them to.

  7. Your evenings at home sound fine to me! I do think you need to get Netflix. I have a free trial I can give to friends if you want it. There is such an amazing selection, especially compared to RedBox. 😉

Bella was the last movie I watched and it was terrific.

  8. i have never done the dishcloth thing….maybe when my wrist will let me knit again.

just saw 27 dresses when fatty was gone last week…it was enjoyable if you haven’t already seen it.

also, can’t find the book i wanted to send – go figure. i am going to choose something else and hope you haven’t read it!

  9. Molly, you bring back memories of when we gutted our house, well 2 houses. We weren’t smart enough to never do it again. :)I don’t know if redbox has these movies, but I recommend Dan in real life & August Rush. I thought they both were good movies.

  10. You’re right! Someone’s gotta do it :o)!! The name of the dishcloth is endorsement enough for me! Thanks for sharing – I am going to check out the pattern. It seems like a quick and useful project. I don’t rent movies from anywhere, but one of my friends let me borrow “waitress” with Keri Russell, and I’m looking forward to watching that tonight! Take care! xox, Linnea

  11. That is very funny…I find myself doing similar things in terms of girlie movies and tv when my husband is away. The dishcloths look great. I made some washcloths awhile back; I’ll have to try some of these now.
