coming up for air

Emma is trying to earn two dollars by cleaning the house. She’s doing a bang up job actually, putting things away in the right places and spraying and wiping down every empty surface leaving me gasping for breath over the smells. Thank goodness she’s using Mrs. Meyer’s, so I don’t feel too bad about inhaling the fumes. She even sprayed down the stove burners I noticed, as they started to smoke when I put on water for a cup of tea a few minutes ago.
But at least she’s singing while she works. A few lines I’ve caught:

I’ve got to clean it right, right, RIGHT!
You start in one place and then you move to another!
I’ve got to clean for my mom who’s doing nothing on the computer.
(that one was on purpose.)
I love to clean, clean, CLEAN!

She’s having what I call a very industrious day. She found some mini bulbs and planted them in little pots which are sitting on her desk. And she secretly altered her tea bag–horse themed, of course. She has three clothes pins at the ready, clipped to the waist band of her pants, with a rag tucked in her back pocket. Sometimes I think she’s a budding Martha Stewart.

The pictures are from a snow storm that moved through the other day and is now almost completely gone except for some blotches of snow dotting the fields here and there. It was a beautiful snowfall.

And the miniswap is about half full. So don’t worry that you’re too late. There’s still plenty of room.

  1. Love the song! Ours enjoy cleaning and polishing but here we have renditions of “It’s The Hard Knock Life”from Annie! When visitors or the neighbours hear I have to assure them that mine aren’t actually abused as child labour! They go the whole hog and wear aprons(vintage!) and headscarves, rags in their pockets and have their skinny little knees showing!

  2. I love the singing – that is exactly the sort of thing that would happen in this house. For example ‘I would do my homework but Mum is still on the computer.’ Emphasis on MUM and STILL.

  3. I just signed up for the miniswap – yay! I think I’m more excited. Ah well. Love the cleaning industry – wish I could get some of that over here. Occasionally mopping passes Beatrice’s fancy. And a great work song.

  4. sigh,i wish MY emma would take anurge to clean, however, at 12,that is not so much fun anymore….

especially since “doing the dishes”has become an expectation…

i will have to move on to my8 year old boy instead.

:)and that song, so cute, heehee

  6. Goodness, I wish I was that productive in one day. Perhaps you could send her our way when she’s done cleaning your house?! 🙂 There are lots of horses around here…

  7. Oh my, that is so sweet and funny and wonderful! She drinks tea? I LOVE that she customizes her own tea bag- THAT is awesome. Ben loves to clean, clean, CLEAN but usually makes more of a mess, mess, MESS. He’s getting better actually and works for free so I should take advantage more often, I guess (although can’t complain about two dollar fees!). Love the song!

  8. I love the little songs of little people. It reminds me of my horse lovin’ girl when she was about 4 helping while we were using fresh greenery to decorate for Christmas. She was gathering and sorting and stacking the cast off boughs all the while singing, “Im buildin’ a house, I’m buildin’ a house, I’m buildin’ a house, for my mudda.” Cute, cute. Thanks for bringing back a sweet memory of my most difficult teen!

  9. Ahhh the help and the songs that go with it, those songs are the best. Lately there has been fighting at our house everytime the vacuum comes out, they all need a chance and Samuel has discovered the joy that is wiping baseboards with a wet rag -So funny!
