porch stories

We had our first frost this morning. It made for a beautiful, clear morning and left a thin layer of glittery frost on our  white railings.

I got a haircut. It had been a very long time. Amazing what a good cut can do for a girl. I probably got three inches cut off my hair. I can actually see my neck. (excuse the bedhead in this picture, though)

This guy landed on our porch one rainy afternoon. I think he might be a local pigeon-man’s homing pigeon. He’s slightly off course, I guess. He hung around for awhile until our big, clumsy yellow dog came busting out the door and scared him away for good.

I am absolutely happy with my five year journal from RareDevice. I had it on my Christmas list, but started to get the "what if they all sell out" panic. It’s the only good-looking five year journal I could find, without gold gilded edges and a red leather cover. I write a short snippet each night–the weather, a highlight of the day, a thought, what time I’m going to bed. Thought it would be interesting to see how my bedtime changes over five years. It’s my personal almanac of sorts.

At bedtime this weekend Emma told me: I love you. I love your nose. I love your armpits. I love under your fingernails. She also told me that she didn’t want me to call her ‘sweetie’ anymore. Ouch. That broke my heart a little bit.

  1. I love the journal idea. Yes, I totally agree about the haircut feeling. I did the same thing this weekend and got 2″ cut off my hair and BANGS!!! My neighbor noticed it immediately this morning and raved about the cut saying it’s the best look for me so far. I’m so happy to hear someone give me a compliment that I got a little teary…shame on me for being so needy. I think your cut looks cute from what I can see.

  2. what a fabulous idea {the journal}. i should so do this myself but i have the tendency to start something and never finish…which is quite the bummer and something i should really working on changing about myself.

love the hair cut and glad to see that i’m not the only one with bed head in the a.m.’s.

  3. so, so sweet (oops!). i’d say it’s a fair trade – you can’t call her sweetie but she loves under your fingernails. really, doesn’t all that love make it better!?

i took a walk this morning, with a friend, and i kept saying – over there – isn’t that frost!? it is. a turning point.

    happy monday to you.

  4. Bedhead rocks! i too got a hair cut this weekend but it needs some fixing.Your journal reminds me of ones kept when i was young. From Grade2-graduation i wrote every day. important stuff – they had to have locks.it melts me to hear little ones say i love you (unprompted). it’s such a habit to call Little A lovebug i don’t think i could stop if he asked.

  5. Gorgeous Morning shot…lovely bed-head shot…funny porch visitor…Fantastic journel idea, I wish I had the discipline to do something like that. That Emma just kills me…they say the sweetest, funniest, silliest things. This weekend Samuel told us “you have to believe me, everything I say is the truth!!” Huh?

  6. You know what? I betcha next week (or maybe even tonight) Emma won’t really mind if you slip up and call her sweetie just once. Becca tells me she loves me “more than *pink!*” and that certainly is a lot! :0)

  7. oh, i love the five-year journal idea. i have always kept a regular journal, which i usually write in first thing in the morning, but sometimes last thing at night. but jack’s vacation journal — “the LOG” — has me now keeping a daily log where i write just teeny snippets of the day — funny things the kids say, etc. and i love it. it’s the kind of thing that gets left out of the “real” journal because i always feel like i have to write out a big long background explanation.

  8. Oh my. The “sweetie” part just drove a sharp shard of icy fear into my heart. I think mostly because you reminded me of my son, who is so snuggly and “i love you mommy, you’re so beautiful” that the thought he might do this some day hurts a little bit.

  9. no sweetie? hopefully she’ll forget she said that!

hooray for a new ‘do – cutting mine this summer was the best thing i have done for myself in a long, long time.

  10. But I liked your hair long. I think that gave me more of a pang than the part about Emma! Just kidding. The shadowy reflection looked really cute. And if it worked wonders for you than it must be lookin good. Can’t wait to see it!

  11. My husband once asked his father to stop calling him ‘pup’ and has regretted it ever since. I still love being called Gator. Sometimes kids don’t know what they really want!

  12. No more sweetie? Is that even allowed? I don’t think so. Start calling her stinky feet until she reconsiders. Sometimes options are good. (I am a devious and manipulative mother, as you can see).

The frost is beautiful. The journal will be such a treasure. I had a sudden vision of your daughters finding it when they had babies of their own.

  13. Ah! I’m excited to see the new cut! I’ll be at the farm on Sunday for the trailride (I can just picture how excited Emma is about it). Can’t wait to see you and of course, cover ‘Bip with kisses. xoxo

  15. I’ve been keeping a 10 year journal (in a homemade journal book, not nearly so nice as what you’ve got!) for seven years now – it is one of my most prized possessions. You will cherish every memory you write – from the mundane (wow, five years ago we went to that park) to the amazing (wow, four years ago, we were praying about that, and look what has happened since!).Cheers
