Triple-Teamed

I’ve been triple-teamed this Christmas. This morning, I walked out of our local Target with two boxes of freshly-purchased colored lights. I have always put my foot down about this. I am a white light girl. I’ve grown up with a white light mother.
My husband on the other hand, comes from the other side–the  multi-colored light lovers. But this year with two more votes able to be  cast on the subject, the colored light lovers have won out.  Dan tells me white lights are too serious and colored lights are for kids.
I couldn’t even pull the, "but we already have all these sets of white lights"-thinking, because ALL of our Christmas decorations are sitting–lonely, dark and sad–in the basement of our unsold Wisconsin home.
But, hey, I’m game for a little color. Why not? If it will make the girls (and Dan for that matter) cheer a little more loudly each evening when we flip the switch on the tree, then I’m all for it. And you know, once in the aisle of colored lights, my hand even hesitated on the box of dancing, flashing, song-playing colored lights. If I’m going to jump in to this, I might as well do it with both feet. (But then, I saw the eight dollar!! price difference–those lights jumped right back to their place on the shelf.)

In the meantime, Emma is getting creative with the tree decorations. There are five  Schleich horses grazing on  "bales" of evergreen needles, meticulously placed around the tree. And, she collected these seed pods on Sunday when she was out sweeping the patio for my grandmother. (what a gal!) Personally, I love them. I could have a whole tree of natural "decorations" with a few birds and nests mixed in. So it’s a start on the road to Christmas decoration recovery. Tonight, while I’m at book group Dan will string the colored lights, I’m sure. And I’ll most likely (happily) join the ranks of  colored-light lovers with the rest of my little family.

  1. We have white and colored lights on our tree this year and it looks very pretty. I’m a white lights gal too but everyone tells me with kids you have to have colored lights. No one seems able to tell me why.

  2. ‘twilight zone’ music time…..parallel lives again…our white lights died last year and i was all ready to buy new ones BUT not sure what happened but we’ve GONE COLOURED! pictures soon..when i can stop jumping up and down with excitement!!!

  3. i grew up with white lights – and i love them still. while i appreciate people who put colored lights up on their houses – variety for the kids – i think kids like white lights, too.way to compromise, though!

  4. zippity doo dah for the colored lights! we always had them – those giant bulbs – anyone remember those?

Christmas was the one time of year my mom relented of her sedate, classic, earth-toned color scheme. I’m so very glad 😉 (maybe yours will be too…)

    xxxxme

  5. I’m so with you, girlfriend – a whitelightgirl living in a coloredlight household….

I figure there will come a day when I can have things exactly the way that I want them – but that day’ll be a little sad, you know??? Because really, the happy family is more important than a classic, tasteful looking tree….

  6. I’m a white-light girl too..colored lights can go into the kids’ rooms. So far I’m still winning 🙂

Good for you for being flexible! Compromise is important in a family.

  7. I am warming to colored lights this year. The kid’s tree has colored lights, although the tree in our front room (the live, breakable ornament tree) has white lights. I don’t think I could stand to change that one. But, colored lights, I do like you a little more these days. xo

  8. We alternate years of use of colored lights with white lights. But we’re the opposite from y’all, I being the colored light lover and my husband being the white light lover. It’s all good!

  9. I grew up with white lights, and my husband’s family had colored lights. So we do white outside and colored on the inside tree. I actually like both. I’m a fan of the round bulbs for the colored lights.

  10. Yea! I love colored lights…but I run a long strand of white lights up the middle of the tree and it just brightens it up! Then I load on the colored lights.Love your blog…came here by way of Posey gets cozy.
