sailing and sewing

On Saturday afternoon the rain paused long enough for Dan, the girls and me to go out for an evening sail on the Chesapeake Bay with my Dad.

It’s the first time I’ve been on his boat since before I was married. This time was a bit different–keeping two wee ones happy and safe instead of those carefree younger days of dangling my legs over the sides and watching the occasional blue crab float by in the waves.

I definitely spent too much time below deck, which was a bit hard on my pregnant "woozieness".The girls found it more fun to take naps in "their" beds below, than wander around on the deck.

But all in all, it was a wonderful evening out on the water. More sailing shots here.

I also finally cranked up the sewing machine again yesterday. I’ve been meaning to hang these baskets from IKEA for awhile now, but hadn’t found the right spot. Then it hit me yesterday that they would make a great place for the mess of mittens and hats this fall and winter. Of course they were a little too blah, so I added a little detail–a basket for each of the girls and an extra big pocket for the oh-so-exciting bills and mail.

FYI: I got these hanging baskets at IKEA about two months ago for only $9.99. Not a bad deal, for a little organization.

  1. Love the sailing pics, love that Michael takes his girls sailing, LOVE the baskets (I love organization!), and love that I recognize the striped scarf in the top basket…I’ll be on the farm for 4 days starting Friday…can’t wait to see you and play with you and the girls. xoxo

  2. Loving those baskets, what a great place to store all the stuff that comes with kids and winter. As soon as I saw that sailboat I thought, “oh no, pregnancy queasiness and sailing??” so I’m glad to hear it was alright.

We made the pumpkin bread yesterday, mmmm.

  3. OH, I bet the girls had fun! What a neat adventure. Love the sail shot. Those embellished baskets are very cool! I like what you did with them. I can think of tons of uses for those nifty things. Well done. 😉

  4. Those baskets are too cool! I’ve been looking for something like that to add a little organization to our lives. Too bad we don’t have an Ikea in the area.

  5. Cute! Oh, and to respond to your comment about our wool bedding– we got the wool snugglemate- the thicker one. It is pretty pricey, but since the alternative for us was a new mattress, not so bad. (Our mattress is only a few years old but pretty firm.) I would not recommend it if you problem is just that your mattress is old, but if your mattress is supportive but not soft enough on top, it might work for you guys. I also have heard good things about Ikea mattresses, and I believe that they don’t spray them with flame retardent chemicals like most mainstream American ones because they are made of a flame retardent material. Hope your feelig well…

  6. I love those sailing shots. But I’m with you on the wooziness. Not the pregnant kind, the regular kind. I don’t do well on boats. I’m off to look at your flickr set now!

  7. love the baskets. sail boat looks cool. You are so brave to do that pregnant! I can’t do it NOT pregnant! 🙂 HA

  8. The baskets are adorable! I love the embellishment. And sailing sounds fun! Too bad I get motion sickness! [I was the one yacking on the boat while snorkeling on our honeymoon!]

  9. loving these. great fabric. one of my favorite things is adorning basic Ikea items. best of both worlds…

and wonderful sailing photos, although just looking at them gives me the queasies ; )

  10. What a fun sail. I can imagine how queezy I’d be if I were pregnant and on a boat though (I don’t have the toughest stomach). I love your organizer. We had these and used them in the playroom, but our version had a rather garish bright stripey fabric that IKEA had chosen for them. I like your idea much much better, that…I could look at every day…easily.

  11. The sailing looks and sounds fabulous – I really enjoyed the pictures….

Love the IKEA baskets, too – particularly the way the you made them your own….
