Swapping and Simplicity

Last week I offered some fabric from my stash and Stephanie over at sumthings swapped me for a few yards. She makes these great bags and she sent me my very own. I absolutely love it because it is nice and big (i’m still carrying sippy cups, a spare diaper, and a doll or three!), and it has great pockets. I love it, I love it. And not only that, she sent along a mini version for another certain someone in my house (no, not Dan, Jackie–I knew you were thinking that!!)…Emma takes it everywhere and I’ve asked if I could borrow it sometime and she told me ‘probably not’.  What a doll.

We are just four days away from our move and I think we are in trouble–my mother-in-law came over tonight and declared, "your house doesn’t really look any different." uh-oh. I guess it will be a busy weekend. Sadly, it took me two days just to sort through my craft stuff. I’ve learned two things about myself:
1. I have a lot of yarn and not enough yarn…meaning I have a ton of yarn but for some reason I only buy one or two skeins, barely enough to make anything beyond a short scarf or a pair of mittens. it’s a problem…maybe i’ll just have to start knitting everything in stripes.
2. I have a lot of ribbon. The offray ribbon outlet is in my hometown in MD, now a mere two hours from where we’re moving…(toni I haven’t forgotton our swap). Almost every time I go home, my mom and I hit the outlet. You would all probably pass out at the selection and the prices. I promise I’ll take pictures next time. I’m hoping to hit it this spring. So this is my box of "thinned out" ribbon…meaning I gave some away. And the box is several layers deep. And see those green, pink, and chocolate brown grosgrain ribbons rolls on the top left–the rolls are probably 8 inches across…and do I even tell you the price?? (99 cents!!–for the WHOLE roll!)

Well, I had more to write about, but my bed is calling me and I’m on early duty with Mary tomorrow–dan and I have been taking turns on who gets up, who sleeps in…it’s glorious!
But before bed, I must drink my giant glass of water. It’s my effort to cleanse my arteries (I know it doesn’t make sense) after our Irish dinner…I found some recipes online–sausage potato CODDLE (how could I NOT make that recipe), boxty, and then a compltely sinful irish mint chocolate brownie for dessert. The coddle recipe was a total clogger–basically greasy meat and potatoes…and the brownie recipe could be described as this: go to your grocery store. Find every fudgy, chocolatey ingredient in the place, mix them all together, now add some butter, then dump in some chocolate chips to the thick chocolate sludge. Bake it, spread some mint frosting on top, then cover with more chocolate. It was so sickening and so decadent–but only in small doses. So much so, there might still be leftovers for next st patty’s. Just the smallest morsel in your mouth is enough. Your saliva glands work so hard to compensate for the fudgey mouthfull you have to apply pressure to your neck muscles….

  1. Good luck with the packing.I am really coveting that ribbon collection!I could always store if you like, you know so it doesn’t get lost in the move -lol!

  2. Hey what’s wrong with a man having a bag. Jeremy has a mans bag with wipes etc.

Please no greasy food talk. I just had bacon’n’eggs for dinner!! That’s what happens when you have chooks and have a surplus of eggs.

Good luck with your move, Molly. xx

  3. I’m so excited for you to move to MD!!! Good luck with your busy weekend, I’ll be thinking of you as I frantically write papers in preparation for spending next weekend with your Dad in London…and I have a bunch of Debbie Bliss baby knit patterns that only call for 100 grams or so of yarn. Lots of love. xoxo

  4. Good luck with your move, it’s a hard thing to do. I can’t even imagine doing it with kids! And just the words “ribbon outlet” made my heart beat faster!

  5. Good luck with all the packing!I haven’t forgotten about our swap, but I’m on holiday right now. I’ll send your package next week. To your new home!

  6. I guess I’ve added to your yarn problem!;-)I actually had the thought as I sent off the package that there was not enough of any yarn for a big project…

Have you seen the book about knitting with one skein? I do lots of striped felted bags with my odds and ends.

    Good luck with your move!

  7. oh my gosh – i have exactly the same problem with yarn.i fear i am doing the same thing with fabric now, too. i really like patchworky stuff, so it’s okay.i am flipping out about the ribbon outlet – i only live 4 hours from MD, i think it’s worth a little road trip, eh?good luck with moving.

  8. Wow, those ribbons are gorgeous! I’m still trying to decide if not being close to a ribbon outlet is a good thing or a bad thing.

    Good luck with the moving!

  9. I immediately thought of the One Skein book, too, that someone mentioned earlier. Here’s a link where you can click to see some inside pages… http://tinyurl.com/mvwr8. Maybe you can get some ideas.

Good luck and conserve your energy during your move. I’m absolutely green with envy about the ribbon outlet! You should *not* have mentioned the price!

  10. I am feeling your impending deadline with this move. I’ve already explained my wait till the last minute way of working to you, so I won’t bore you. But, gosh I cannot wait until you are back on your regularly scheduled broadcasting. Your comment on my post today made me tear up (either that or PMS, but I’d like to think the first). You are the sweetest. Wish I could come over and pack a box or two. Or like I’ve done when friends are moving, just come over with some wine and chat while THEY pack : ) xo

  11. you are so sweet to post pics of the bag! i am so glad that you like them! i am praying hard that this week is super duper productive and not too overwhelming. And, i may just have to take a trip to the outlet place you spoke of…..Oh mY!! i heart ribbon!loves!!

  12. You just take you sweet time with the ribbon swap, uh…you seem kinda buys right now 🙂 I will look forward to down the road. No rush!!Seeing that box of yours is making my mouth water just a bit!

  13. I found your blog after googling the ribbon outlet. I would love someone to take my $40 and shop for me there. If you are ever in the mood to do such a thing, let me know!Anyway, when I found your blog, I was just so amazed. Your photos are just awesome. I love all the things you snap pictures of and your perspective. Your new home and the area around it are just beautiful, and while it looks nothing like my actual home, it does look just like the one I have dreamed of my whole life.Good luck with your move and all of your “green efforts”. I look forward to reading more.Roberta
